This is a really good example of a late Victorian, aesthetic period coal scuttle dating from around 1890. The coal box is in excellent condition, beautifully polished, with a lovely golden glow. The hinged lid has a striking embossed design in the classic aesthetic style with large sunflower. The box is complete with its original shovel with solid ebony handle. The fittings (feet, twin handles and lid knob) are of brass with contrasting copper rivets and very attractively designed in an aesthetic movement style. The first time i saw this frame i was sure it was a reproduction...... Once i saw it up close i saw that amazingly, it wasn't. This is a museum quality, outstanding c1870 Victorian compo frame like no other i've seen before. Firstly, the condition is fantastic with only minor wear and great patina. The 3 3/4 wide coppery/bronze finished molding has so many things going on, with the beaded outer edge, textured backgrounds, triangulated shell/fan corners, surrounding floral vine (which i believe is morning glory) and a decorated lambs-tongue style site edge. This is an excellent c1870 Victorian Aesthetic compo frame. Beaded inner and outer edges surround a floral vining design that is all highlighted with a metallic copper finish. The frame is in excellent condition with only minor wear and has the original wavy glass and shingle backboard. Measures 12 5/8 x 14 5/8 with a 10 1/8 x 12 1/8 rabbet.
